A Look at Google Trends For Rap Slang

Yesterday, my boss at my day job asked me what "thot" means. The circle was complete. I cringed lovingly, then reluctantly told her. She said, "Wow, that's brilliant. I can't wait to use that." For her own sake, I responded "Please don't. Thot is dead."

We have a sense for these things. For example, when Diplo tweeted "tater thot" a couple months ago, it felt like it was high time for everyone to go home. Rap vernacular comes and goes, but with the power of Google Trends, we can actually look at when these words peak. If you've ever wondered whether you were late, or if you want to avoid making the same puns everyone else made a year prior, come and explore the life and death of some of the words that pay the bills over at Urban Dictionary. Then you can 1. go clown your friends whenever they use outdated language (e.g. "yolo"), 2. bandwagon one of French Montana's yet to be globally espoused etymological sublimations (e.g. "alphet"), or 3. try to bring back a vestige that our public vocabulary all but abandoned years ago (e.g. "thizz").

Let's start with "yolo," a word which was apparently a self-fulfilling prophecy for its own use. We appear to have moved far beyond its apex, which it reached some time in 2012. Its meteoric rise was closely associated with Drake's "The Motto" (early 2012), and the end of its short life span was punctuated by an SNL parody song (early 2013). Popular queries include "what does yolo," "what yolo mean," and "swag yolo." Which leads us to our next subject: "swag."

"Swag" appears to have some longevity in the game. Though it reached a peak in 2012, when it was still popular to repeat the word in perpetuity, or to replace the affirmative response "yes," it has since dropped into a plateau of steady interest for the last couple of years. Popular queries include "my swag," "the swag," "swag boy," and "tumblr swag." Just to remind you, these are all real things that many real humans have typed into their computers. The people need answers.

Moving on to a personal favorite: "fanute." As you can fanute from the graph, the word was nonexistent before French Montana unwittingly invented it on "Stay Schemin'." Since then, it had its moment, and has since bounced its way out of human-computer curiosity and relevance. But French has not left us hanging. Ever since he tweeted the word "alphet," his amazing misspelling has all but eclipsed its correctly spelled predecessor, and will, with any luck, fanute the word "outfit" altogether.

Finally, "thot" vs. "bae," which exists as real life tension for many people. As you can see, "thot" is finally on its decline. "Bae" is still skyrocketing. Sure, we can attribute this discrepancy to various analytics that we don't understand or to languages we don't care to investigate (for example, "bae" is killing it in Brunei and Burma right now), but let's just say it's a new age for the world. Everyone is getting married, people are staying together, and the global bae is boxing out the global thot.

Otherworldly drama has had a special place in TV fans' hearts since the days of Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Charmed. Fiction has gradually evolved vampires and werewolves from malevolent and hostile creatures to being compassionate near-human heroes.

True Blood has changed the way we perceive vampires. It went from portraying vampires as a minority class to a world where they live openly and somewhat amicably with humans, fairies and werewolves. Seasons 2 and 3 of True Blood garnered the highest spike of interest the series has ever seen, more than double of Season 1. Despite its devoted fan following, though, online interest in the current and final season has dwindled, as you can see in this Google Trends graph (Google normalizes its graphs so the peak search activity has a value of 100).

While the rest of us were out frolicking in the sun, The New York Times' Upshot blog spent the early part of the summer sussing out which counties in the United States were the easiest and hardest to live in. After a little extra prompting from Google's chief economist, editor David Leonhardt and the Upshot team used Google Correlate to dig into what these groups on either side of the digital divide were searching for online. Some terms -- the like "Oprah" and "Super Bowl" - are searched for by just about everyone. As you might've guessed, though, those search terms ultimately diverge... pretty wildly.

In the so-called easiest locales (which scored best when it came to education, median household income, unemployment rate, disability rate, life expectancy and obesity) the terms that correlate most strongly with easy living locations include "elph," "jogger" and "nb-4l". Apparently those who live in well-to-do areas had plenty of questions about Canon digital cameras. And the top three search terms for those living in harder areas? "Free diabetic," "antichrist" and "38 revolver". The list speaks to a dramatic difference in what people concern themselves with when their life circumstances skew in one direction or another. It doesn't take long to notice certain trends popping up, either -- technological tidbits pepper the rest of the easy life list, while religious references figure prominently in its rougher counterpart. These particular rabbit holes run deeper than you might think, so it's definitely worth checking out the full Times piece for more.

For Mo’ne Davis, Questions in Aftermath of Little League World Series

“I’ve got to get my answers straight,” Davis, 13, said with a smile after her team was eliminated from the Series on Thursday night. “Every question I can think of, I have to know the answer to.”

One of the questions already being asked is this: After becoming the first girl to throw a shutout at the Series, a ratings bonanza for ESPN, a cover subject for Sports Illustrated and a national figure of inspiration, should Davis try to cash in on her celebrity?

Sports marketing experts agree that Davis and her family must decide quickly. But few athletes face such significant decisions at such a young age. Estimates on her earning potential vary widely.

“The public’s memory is a lot shorter than it used to be,” Shabelman said.

Though Davis played with great composure and had remarkable success as a pitcher in the Series, she is expected to move quickly out of the limelight with football season beginning, Shabelman said. And she did not win a championship, which would have broadened her appeal to advertisers.

Davis might be able to earn $5,000 to $25,000 from a sports drink deal, Shabelman said. “It was a great little run, but there’s not going to be vast money from this unless she gets a movie done about her or a TV show, which is very unlikely,” he said.

Other experts estimated that Davis’s earning potential could be much higher, perhaps $100,000 a year alone from a shoe and apparel deal, and that, in the right circumstances, she might be able to pay for college without needing an athletic scholarship. A baseball signed by Davis sold Wednesday for $510 on eBay.

Bob Dorfman, the executive creative director at Baker Street Advertising in San Francisco and a sports marketing analyst, said he thought Davis could earn up to $500,000 as a teenage role model endorsing products from sports drinks to cellphones, computers, school supplies and fashion.

“If it was my kid, why not?” Dorfman said. “She seems awfully poised. She seems like she can handle it.”
Having pitched in front of crowds of more than 30,000 fans at the Little League World Series, Davis plans to begin playing girls’ varsity soccer and basketball, with far smaller audiences, at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia. Its teams play in the Inter-Academic League, a conference of elite private schools, which is not bound by the governing rules of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association.

On Friday, officials at Davis’s school were trying to determine whether league bylaws governed her ability to accept endorsements and remain eligible for varsity sports.

“We’re in an unprecedented situation with this kind of extraordinary talent at such a young age,” said Kate Noel, the school’s director of external affairs.

For college eligibility in sports other than football and men’s basketball, athletes are not considered prospects until they reach the ninth grade, the N.C.A.A. said. Davis has not yet begun eighth grade, so it is unclear exactly how the rules will later apply to her.

Also, athletes can be considered professional in one sport and amateur in another, as when minor league baseball players remain eligible to play college football. So if Davis accepted endorsements related to baseball but planned to play basketball in college, she might not be risking her future eligibility as much.
“Once enrolled in college, the student-athlete would be expected to take the necessary steps to ensure that these ads are no longer being used,” said Christopher Radford, an N.C.A.A. spokesman.

Given the legal tumult involving the N.C.A.A., the rules could change significantly by the time Davis enters college in five years.

“Ultimately, it’s a family decision, but Mo’ne has a unique, timely and potentially lucrative opportunity to take another step for all female athletes,” said Lindsay Kagawa Colas, the vice president of action and Olympic sports at the Wasserman Media Group in Los Angeles. “She’s inspiring people of all ages, particularly girls. She’s a hero for them now.”

"I think it's ridiculous. That's absurd,'' said Steve Keener, CEO of Little League, Inc., which hosts the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa. "(But) I don't know how you would ever control it.
"We supervise the teams while they're here, but we're not with them every minute. So if any player in the Little League World Series signs a baseball for somebody, we have no idea what they're going to do with that baseball after they get it. In some respects, it shows you why a lot of Major League Baseball players are reluctant to sign autographs anymore.''

Brandon Steiner, owner of Steiner Sports, a leading sports memorabilia company in New York, said he would pay Mo'ne at least $25,000 to autograph between 500 to 1,000 items and estimated she could make up to $100,000 on the deal. But Steiner said he wouldn't make the offer because it could jeopardize Mo'ne's eligibility to play college athletics.

A federal judge last month ruled that the NCAA unfairly restricts college athletes from earning money based on their names and likeness – but the NCAA is appealing the decision and it's unclear how much athletes may be able to earn in the future and retain their eligility.

James Foley 'never cracked'

"We don't know why a jury of Rick Perry's peers decided to charge him with two felony counts," said Michael Czin, a spokesman for the Democratic National Committee.

But Democrat Lanny Davis, a special counsel to then-President Bill Clinton, disparaged the indictment against Mr. Perry. "A good lawyer can make a good argument even when he has bad facts," Mr. Davis said in an interview. "But I can't intellectually find an argument that passes the laugh test with this one."
Thursday, Mr. Perry cast the indictment as politically motivated. Listing Democratic and liberal figures who have criticized the charges, he said: "When David Axelrod, Lanny Davis, Alan Dershowitz, Jonathan Chait all say that this is sketchy, outrageous, totalitarian and McCarthyite, I agree with them—and that's just on the Democratic side."

 http://www.storyweaver.com/UserProfile/tabid/57/userId/5551/Default.aspx

GOP Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, another potential 2016 presidential candidate, also came to Mr. Perry's defense. "I am proud to stand with Rick Perry," Mr. Cruz wrote on Facebook last week, saying that an indictment built on Mr. Perry exercising "his constitutional authority is, on its face, highly suspect."
Mr. Perry will test his public support as he visits three early presidential-nominating states—New Hampshire on Friday and Saturday; South Carolina next week; and Iowa in September. Next month he also heads to Asia for an economic tour that will give him a chance to rub shoulders with foreign leaders.

James Foley — brave until the end — was subjected to beatings and psychological torture with mock executions before he was butchered by his Islamic State captors, it was revealed Thursday.
“This group, which has a taste for the macabre, made him stand against a wall in a pose as if he had been crucified,” Didier Francois, a French reporter who had also been held by ISIS, told radio station Europe1.
A week before the Islamic fanatics released their barbaric video of Foley’s execution, they sent his family in New Hampshire a chilling email rife with misspellings and grammatical errors — but clear in its awful intent.
“Today our swords are unsheathed towards you, GOVERNMENT AND CITIZENS ALIKE!” the email states. It continues in all capitals: “And we will not stop untill we quench our thirst for your blood.”
The ugly Aug. 12 missive was released late Thursday by Foley’s employer, Boston-based GlobalPost.

http://www.gisci.org/UserProfile/tabid/61/userId/35897/Default.aspx

The news organization said the Foley family first heard from ISIS this past Nov. 26, when it demanded a ransom. It was evident from the email that the Obama administration refused to pay the $132 million ransom or exchange Foley for Aafia Siddiqui, an MIT-trained behavioral scientist from Pakistan who has been dubbed “Lady Al Qaeda.”

The ISIS email began with an apparent slam against President Obama that was written in caps: “How long will the sheep follow the blind sheppard?”
In closing, ISIS warned “you and your citizens will pay” for the air strikes that Obama recently ordered against the militant group.

“The first of which being the blood of the American citizen, James Foley!” the note read. “He will be executed as a DIRECT result of your transgressions towards us!”

Foley, 40, went missing in northern Syria in November 2012. There had been no public word of him until his execution was posted Tuesday on YouTube.

François and other French journalists who were prisoners with Foley said the American was targeted for extreme abuse after ISIS discovered his brother John was a U.S. airman who had served in Afghanistan.
But Foley “never cracked, even under the most difficult conditions,” François said. Foley was “one of the pillars of the group,” he said.

Asked if the cloaked terrorist looked familiar from the video, François, 53, said: “Recognized is a very big word. I see roughly who it is.”
Nicolas Henin, another former French hostage, told ABC News the doomed American managed to briefly escape at one point before he was found wandering in a Syrian desert.

“James was a bit punished for a presumed attempt to escape, but it had no real chance,” Henin said.
Henin added that watching the video was “extremely shocking” for him because he had literally stood in the murdered man’s shoes.
“The shoes that he was wearing when he was taken to this place in the desert, I wore them,” Henin said. “We had few shoes that we were using to go to the bathroom and we were sharing them.”
Henin said Foley showed what he was made of in his final moments — kneeling in the desert with all hope gone.
“That is someone, I mean, a real man,” Henin said. “Many people would’ve freaked out and (would have been) terrified because he knew very well what was going to happen to him. . . . But (he) was still standing up, looking forward and speaking with a clear voice.”

Rick Perry Indictment May Help More Than Hurt His 2016 Chances

British intelligence agencies MI5 and MI6 have identified the man suspected of the horrific beheading of American journalist James Foley, according to UK media reports. The hooded man with an English accent is believed to be 23-year-old Abdel-Majed Abdel Bary, known to fellow Islamic State militants as Jihadi John. The former rapper left his family home in an affluent west London suburb last year to fight in the civil war in Syria.

In early August he tweeted a photo of himself wearing military camouflage and a black hood, while holding a severed head in his left hand.

British SAS forces are hunting Mr Foley's killers, using a range of high-tech equipment to track him down and potentially free other hostages.

The Mail on Sunday is reporting that a "significant force" of SAS personnel has been deployed to northern Iraq over the past two days, joining local units fighting IS. They have fanned out into four-man teams, accompanying Iraqi and Kurdish troops in an effort to find British jihadis.

The Sunday Times reports that Bary is the key focus of the man hunt. He is one of the British jihadists former hostages referred to as the Beatles because of their British accents. The two others were called "George" and "Ringo".

The two other Britons suspected of involvement in the crime are Aine Davis, a former drug dealer who converted to Islam, and Razul Islam, who is believed to have joined the terrorist group that murdered Mr Foley.

Bary is the son of an Egyptian-born militant who is awaiting trail on terrorism in Manhattan, due to his alleged involvement in the bombing of US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998.

Before leaving the family home to fight in Syria, Bary was an aspiring rapper known as L Jinny whose music was played on one of the UK's most popular radio stations, BBC Radio 1.

Recordings of his songs will prove vital to the investigating team, with experts using voice recognition technology to match his voice with that of the man who brutally decapitated Mr Foley.

Bary made a number of music videos for his songs, with titles such as Flying High, Dreamer and Overdose.

A crowd of supporters cheered Perry on as he spoke outside the courthouse Tuesday. His mug shot is expected to be released later Tuesday evening.Perry maintains that the indictment is a political attack that infringes upon his right of free speech as both a governor and a private citizen."This indictment is nothing short of an attack on the constitutional powers of the office of governor," Perradded. "There are important fundamental issues at stake. And I will not allow this attack on our system of government to stand. I'm going to fight this injustice with every fiber of my being. And we will prevail. We'll prevail because we're standing for the rule of law," he said.

Perry's legal team includes a number of well-known attorneys, including Ben Ginsberg, who has long been a staple in Republican politics. He represented former President George W. Bush in the 2000 Supreme Court case that awarded him the presidency, served as counsel to Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in 2008 and 2012, and acted as the co-chair of President Obama's election reform commission.
"This is an outlandish prosecution. It will never, ever ever stand," Ginsburg said Tuesday on "CBS This Morning.""It is unprecedented, it is outside the bounds. I think that's why you see so many people who are not Rick Perry supporters, who are Democrats, saying how wrong this indictment is."
Perry has indeed highlighted the fact that even David Axelrod, a former adviser to Mr. Obama, called the indictment "pretty sketchy" on Twitter. Republicans have been quick to defend him as well.

http://sgloans.blog.fc2.com/

Mr. Perry has cast the investigation as a partisan witch hunt, and many supporters applaud him for remaining unapologetic in the face of the indictment, which stems from the Republican governor's attempt to force the resignation of a Democratic district attorney after she was convicted of drunken driving.
As Mr. Perry lays the foundation for a possible second White House bid, strategists in early primary election states such as Iowa and South Carolina say the indictment would strengthen his standing among voters there.
"Republicans in South Carolina are going to eat up what Perry did," said Chad Connelly, that state's former Republican Party chairman.
Mark Lundberg, chairman of the Sioux County GOP in Iowa, said the indictment appears to be "political gamesmanship," and potential Iowa caucus-goers probably won't hold it against him.

Floyd Mayweather says fight with Amir Khan

Five-division world champion Floyd Mayweather claims his fight with Amir Khan can still happen and dismissed claims that Manny Pacquiao would provide the British boxer with a sterner test. The proposed fight between Khan and Mayweather is yet to materialise, despite it being touted consistently by both camps, and the 37-year-old American reiterated his desire to see it happen. 'He (Amir Khan) knows that the fight between us can still happen,' Mayweather said.

'He is an exciting young fighter - but I don't just fight anybody - they have to prove themselves. 'If you ask me will the fight happen - then I would say yes. I hope next year - but these fights are always about timing.'I saw the comments where he thought Manny would give him a tougher fight than me. I have no response to that. I will just remind him of those comments after I have beaten him.'

The champ may have met his match — reading. But he reminded people on Twitter early Saturday that it hasn't stopped him from getting rich.Power 105 disc jockey Charlamagne Tha God played a humiliating recording on the air Friday morning of boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. struggling with a few simple sentences.
The 37-year-old fighter with a 46-0 record sounds defeated trying to read a “drop” used in between radio segments on WWPR (105.1 FM).“I’m Floyd Mayweather,” he says before stumbling for minutes through the rest of the promo that’s supposed to last about 10 seconds. The phrase “movement to support hiring vets” proves particularly vexing.

"MythBusters" fan-favorites Kari Byron, Tory Belleci and Grant Imahara are leaving the series after ten years, the show's hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman announced on last night's episode.
The axed trio took to Twitter saying the Discovery Channel show had decided to take a "new direction."
"I guess you guys are finding out the news right about now. After a decade of the MythBusters, we are no longer with the show," Kari said in a series of tweets. "Thank you to all the fans who have supported us. The show is taking a new direction. It was an amazing run. I learned so much about myself and the world. I love you all @MythBusters. I am sad for an ending but there will be exciting new adventures for us."
When asked by FOX411 the reason the three would not be returning next season, a representative for the show failed to elaborate what new direction the show was planning.

"Kari, Tory and Grant have been an incredibly important part of 'MythBusters' for over a decade," a senior publicist with Discovery told FOX411 in an email. "From explosions to car crashes to even more explosions, this trio has helped shape 'MythBusters' into the Emmy-nominated series it is today.  Everyone at Discovery wants to thank them for their tireless work busting almost 1000 myths, and we wish them all the best on their future endeavors."
There appears to be no hard feelings between the show and its former stars. Bellici wrote on Twitter, "It's been an amazing ride for 10 years! We couldn't have done it without you guys. You're the best fans anyone could wish for. Thank you."

The Queens-born rapper followed up that video with a second, saying Jimmy Kimmel pledged to broadcast Mayweather reading out loud on his talk show, and that the challenge would be easier than originally planned.
“We don’t want to put pressure on you. We know you can’t pronounce those words in that ‘Harry Potter’ book, so we’re going to let you read ‘Cat in the Hat,’” he said.

Mayweather grew up in Grand Rapids, Mich. His mother was on drugs and his father served time for drugs. He has said he dropped out of high school to pursue boxing.
“I knew that I was going to have to try to take care of my mom and I made the decision that school wasn't that important at the time and I was going to have to box to earn a living,” Mayweather told the Daily News in 2007.
Normally a profilic tweeter, Mayweather had been noticeable silent since the trash talk started, but he went for a knockout with a Twitter post early Saturday morning.
“Read this $72,276,000.00. God bless,” he tweeted along with a picture of two checks made out to Mayweather Promotions, LLC — each with eight figures.

"It's not only the end of this episode, it's not only the end of this season — it is also the end of an era," host Adam Savage announced.Co-host Jamie Hyneman added, "This season we're going back to our origins with just Adam and me."It's an abrupt change for fans, who've grown to love the Build Team over the past 10 years. And it's a gut-wrenching decision for the three cast members, who tweeted their reactions to the news:

Texas governor Rick Perry indicted for abuse of power allegations

The Texas governor Rick Perry has been indicted for abuse of power after carrying out a threat to veto funding for state public corruption prosecutors. The potential Republican candidate for president in 2016 is accused of abusing his official powers by publicly promising to veto $7.5m for the state public integrity unit at the Travis County district attorney’s office. He was indicted by an Austin grand jury on Friday on felony counts of abuse of official capacity and coercion of a public servant. Maximum punishment on the first charge is five to 99 years in prison. The second is two to 10 years.

Perry said he would veto the funding if the district attorney, Rosemary Lehmberg, didn’t resign. Lehmberg had been convicted of drunken driving. Lehmberg refused and Perry carried out his veto.

 https://groups.drupal.org/user/2816833

The case stems from Perry’s vetoing the $7.5 million biennial funding for the Travis County Public Integrity Unit last year. He threatened to withhold the money unless District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg resigned.
In announcing the indictment, special prosecutor Michael McCrum of San Antonio said he felt confident of the charges brought against the governor and was “ready to go forward.” Mary Anne Wiley, general counsel for the governor, said that Perry is being charged for exercising his rights and power as governor.“The veto in question was made in accordance with the veto authority afforded to every governor under the Texas Constitution. We will continue to aggressively defend the governor’s lawful and constitutional action, and believe we will ultimately prevail,” Wiley said.

Abuse of official capacity is a first-degree felony with punishment ranging from five to 99 years in prison, and coercion of a public servant is a third-degree felony with a penalty of two to 10 years. The indictment immediately fueled partisan fighting. Perry is a conservative Republican indicted by a grand jury in a Democratic county. Regardless, the charges could cripple any chance of a second presidential campaign, which had been gathering some momentum in recent months. In announcing the indictment, McCrum said that he weighed the duty he had in looking at a sitting governor.

No one disputes that Perry is allowed to veto measures approved by the legislature, including part or all of the state budget. But the left-leaning Texans for Public Justice government watchdog group filed an ethics complaint accusing the governor of coercion because he threatened to use his veto before actually doing so in an attempt to put pressure on Lehmberg to quit.“I took into account the fact that we’re talking about a governor of a state and a governor of the state of Texas, which we all love,” said Michael McCrum, the San Antonio-based special prosecutor. “Obviously that carries a lot of importance. But when it gets down to it, the law is the law.”In office since 2000 and already the longest-serving governor in Texas history, Perry is not seeking re-election in November. But the criminal investigation could mar his political prospects as he considers another run at the White House, after his 2012 presidential bid failed.

Lehmberg oversees the office’s public integrity unit, which investigates statewide allegations of corruption and political wrongdoing. Perry said he would not allow Texas to fund the unit while Lehmberg remained in charge.Perry said Lehmberg, who is based in Austin, should resign after she was arrested and pleaded guilty to drunken driving in April 2013. A video recording made at the jail showed Lehmberg shouting at staffers to call the sheriff, kicking the door of her cell and sticking her tongue out.
